General questions

Does Fly support a "direct to" function (a CDI display)?

This is an exert of the Plane & Pilot article (august 99):
"With a GPS connected, however, your position stays in the center and the map moves as you travel. An arrow in the center indicates your actual direction. With a glance, you can tell your position and track with respect to your intended course. This is much more intuitive than a CDI. ".

What are the Flying functions and is there a on-line documentation?

Check the GPS, Mapping, POIs and Flying user guides, and also read the different Fly press articles.

I have recently purchased your GPS pilot and have been using it over the last 3 weeks as a student pilot and it has been fantastic. I use a palm Vx with a Magellan GPS companion and receive a sat lock in about a minute with it mounted on my yoke. The free waypoint generator is a key addition and I have been using Aeroplanner charts without any problem. On element that would be a huge addition is a nearest airport function. Is this possible?

This function is obviously integrated in the map screen if you select the Airport icon display. You will then get graphically the list of the airport near your current position.

Trouble shooting:

I am getting these ?-( symbols on my flight log, what's going on?

These symbols mean that some of the legs are not anymore known because some of the POIs are unknown too. The causes could be that the POIs database or the POI has been erased from your device. Be careful when you remove POIs database if some POIs belong to flight plans, at this time move these POIs to Personal databases.

I've bought your Fly v5.05sx mainly due to WAC Maps I can have on my Palm. But, using my Aeroplanner registered user/password, I'm getting the message "No map in answer" as I requested WAC chart from North east of Brazil to plan most of my flights.

Aeroplanner covers mainly US aeronautical maps. "No map in answer" means that you have might have requested uncovered data. Have you checked on Aeroplanner.com web site?
However you can still import South American maps to your Palm with GPS Pilot freeware Cartographer. Cartographer allows to scan paper maps or convert digital maps to Palm format.

Hard buttons don't work as mentioned for my Tungsten T3

Actually, in the 5.6 versions and for devices with a 5 ways navigation pad, the raw of the 4 hard buttons are not anymore redefined for application purpose. So the behavior you are watching is normal.

For these devices, we have redefined the 5 ways navigation pad buttons as follow:

  • center key for Palm Tungsten users opens a menu that allows you to switch between Fly different views
  • up and down keys, right and left keys allow to scroll directly from map to map
