Cartographer: PaintShop Pro:
to convert color bitmap into grayscale
Thanks to Donald McLennan for this section
1st method:
Edit the file containing your map in PaintShop Pro:
Transform a color map into a 16 colors (4 bits depth) or 2 colors (1 bit
depth) bit map as you wish - select the menu Color Gray Scale.
Then,
- Select the menu Color Decrease color depth 16 colors (4 bits)
for gray scale bit maps (Palm III or equivalent only)
or,
- Select the menu Color Decrease color depth 2 colors (1 bit)"
for black and white bit maps.
In the dialog window, choose the option Palette Windows.
Save the picture - use the File Save As... option and
choose the Windows Bit map (.bmp) format.
2nd method
When importing the map image from the clipboard, the image resolution
will be set to your current Windows desktop configuration. PaintShop Pro
or other graphics utilities provide powerful tools to convert these high
resolution, multiple colors to the black and white or greyscale images
supported by the Pilot. We’ve found that a 2 step reduction allows
us to maintain the proper level of information. Depending on the mapping
software, the colors for streets, highways, etc., are red, gray, blue,
black, etc. When reducing the colors, it is likely that the red and blue
values will be converted to white. We recommend the following procedure:
- First reduce the image colors to 16. This reduces the color palette
to a manageable set of colors. From the PaintShop Pro Menu, Colors
Decrease Color Depth to 16.
- Once the number of colors have been reduced to 16, then it is often
necessary to convert the gray, light blue, white or red color values
to black. To do this, edit the color palette. From the Paintshop Pro
menu, Colors, Edit Palette.
Double clicking the selected color, allows you to change the image color.
We’ve found that changing the grays, light blues, and red values
to black provides an excellent quality map image.
- Once the colors have been converted to mostly black and white, then
simply reduce the image colors to 2. From the PaintShop Pro Menu, Colors,
Decrease Color Depth to 2.
